How to Choose the Right Size Playroom Rug

The right size depends on how the rug is being used within the space.

As the main floor covering in a dedicated playroom: Go as large as the room allows — ideally leaving 18–24 inches of bare floor around all edges. An 8×10 ft or 9×12 ft rug makes the whole room feel like a soft, defined play space.

As a play zone within a bedroom: A 4×6 ft or 5×8 ft rug creates a dedicated activity area without taking over the whole room. Round options in 4–5 ft diameter work particularly well in this context, defining the space without competing with the bed.

How to Wash a Playroom Rug

Playroom rugs need washing more frequently than any other rug in the home. Here's the process:

1. Shake the rug outside first to remove loose debris — crumbs, sand, craft materials, pet hair.
2. Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle at 30°C (86°F) max. Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener.
3. Use a front-load washing machine or a top-load machine without a center agitator.
4. Tumble dry on low heat, or lay flat to air dry. Do not leave sitting wet in the washer.
5. For interactive rugs with fabric accessories: remove all accessories before washing and wash them separately by hand.
6. New rugs may shed fibers during the first few washes — this is normal for natural cotton and diminishes quickly. Vacuum after drying.
