Bedroom Rugs

What Makes a Great Bedroom Rug?

A bedroom rug works differently from any other rug in your home. It doesn't carry heavy foot traffic, but it does something no other piece of furniture does: it's the first tactile experience of your day. That means softness and warmth underfoot matter more here than anywhere else. It also means you need a rug that handles the particular conditions of a bedroom — dust, pet hair, accidental spills — without becoming a chore to maintain.

The best bedroom rugs are soft on bare feet, easy to clean at home, sized correctly for the bed, and visually calm enough to support rest. That's exactly the brief our collection is built around.

Cotton and Wool Bedroom Rugs: Finding Your Match

Cotton bedroom rugs are the practical backbone of the collection. Lightweight, hypoallergenic, and washable on a standard gentle cycle, they're the go-to for families, allergy sufferers, and anyone who wants a bedroom they can keep genuinely clean. The Bloom (available in Natural and Rose) is our most popular bedroom cotton rug: its soft tassels and dusty neutral palette work beautifully alongside linen bedding and natural wood furniture. The Mosaic brings a geometric tile pattern that adds character without overwhelming a restful space. Both feature a RugCycled™ base made from upcycled production waste.

Wool bedroom rugs are for those who want the full sensory experience — deep texture, natural warmth, and the kind of softness that makes getting out of bed feel like less of an event. Our WOOLABLE® patent makes them machine washable, something no other brand offers in natural wool. The Tundra (in White and Blended Beige) is a long-pile, undyed wool rug from our Sheep of the World collection — clean, textural, and statement-making beside a bed. The Steppe offers a shorter pile with carved stripes and fringes for a more understated look. The Forever Always adds a warm ombré in tanned wool tones, perfect for a bohemian or earthy bedroom aesthetic. The Almond Valley brings a geometric bird's-eye-view motif inspired by almond orchards seen from above — neutral and contemporary, equally at home in a master bedroom or a grown-up teen room. Every wool rug includes an anti-slip underlay and a reusable cotton tote bag for storage.

How to Size a Bedroom Rug: The Three Most Common Layouts

Rug placement is the most asked-about topic for bedrooms, and the right answer depends on your bed size and the room's proportions.

Full coverage (all legs on): The largest and most luxurious option. The rug extends at least 18–24 inches beyond all sides of the bed. For a King bed, this typically means an 9×12 ft rug; for a Queen, an 8×10 ft. The whole room feels softer and more cohesive.

Two-thirds placement (front legs off): The most common approach. The rug sits under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, with the foot end fully on the rug. A 5×8 ft rug works for a Queen; a 6×9 ft for a King. The bed appears anchored without requiring a very large rug.

Runners on each side (no rug under the bed): Two narrow runners placed along each side of the bed — each runner roughly 2×6 ft or 2.5×8 ft. The softest landing for bare feet in the morning, with minimal rug visible during the day. A great option for smaller rooms or for showcasing a boldly designed bedframe.

All Lorena Canals bedroom rugs are available in multiple sizes. A custom-size option is also available in cotton, wool, or premium wool for exact fits.

How to Care for a Bedroom Rug

Bedroom rugs accumulate dust, skin cells, and pet hair faster than rugs in any other room — they just look cleaner because foot traffic is low. Regular care makes a meaningful difference.

1. Vacuum weekly with a low-suction setting, moving in the direction of the pile. This prevents dust build-up between washes.
2. For cotton rugs: machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C (86°F) max with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach.
3. For wool rugs: machine wash on a wool or delicate cycle with cold water, in a front-load machine without a center agitator. Do not wring.
4. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to air dry. Never leave sitting wet in the washer.
5. Rotate the rug every 6–12 months — even low-traffic areas develop patterns over time.
6. For rugs larger than 8×10 ft, professional cleaning is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bedroom Rugs

What size rug should I get for a bedroom?

For full coverage under a Queen bed, an 8×10 ft rug works well. For a King, 9×12 ft. If you prefer runners on each side, two 2×6 ft or 2.5×8 ft runners give you soft landings without covering the full floor. For a smaller bedroom or a defined seating area, a 5×8 ft rug anchors the space without overwhelming it.

Where should a rug be placed in a bedroom?

The most common placements are: fully under the bed with 18–24 inches extending on all sides; two-thirds under the bed starting at the foot end; or as paired runners along each side of the bed. All three work — the right choice depends on room size and how much of the rug you want visible.

What is the best material for a bedroom rug?

Wool is the premium choice for bedrooms: naturally soft, temperature-regulating, and moisture-wicking, it creates the warmest underfoot experience. Cotton is better for allergy-prone households and homes with young children, as it's hypoallergenic and the easiest to machine wash. Both are available in washable versions at Lorena Canals.

Are washable bedroom rugs really machine washable?

Yes — all Lorena Canals rugs, including wool, are designed to be washed at home in a standard front-load washing machine. Cotton rugs wash on a gentle cycle; wool rugs use the patented WOOLABLE® process. The key is using a machine without a center agitator and following the care label.

Is a rug under the bed necessary?

Not strictly, but it makes a significant difference — both visually and in terms of comfort. A rug under the bed anchors the furniture, adds warmth to the floor, and gives the room a more finished, designed feel. Even a small rug at the foot of the bed changes how the room reads.

Are Lorena Canals bedroom rugs safe for people with allergies?

Our cotton bedroom rugs are hypoallergenic, made with non-toxic dyes, and free from synthetic fibers. Wool rugs are naturally hypoallergenic as well, though they can shed during the first weeks of use — a normal characteristic of natural wool that diminishes over time.
