How to Choose the Right Size Living Room Rug

The most common rule: all legs on, or at least front legs on. A rug that's too small floats in the middle of the room and makes the space feel disconnected. A rug that's sized correctly anchors the furniture and makes the room feel larger.

For a sofa and coffee table setup: a 8×10 ft or 9×12 ft area rug typically works best, large enough for all sofa legs to sit on it with the coffee table centered. For smaller living rooms or apartment layouts, a 6×9 ft rug with front legs only is a clean, designer-approved approach.

How to Care for a Living Room Rug

1. Vacuum weekly with a low-suction setting — this removes dust and prevents fiber build-up between washes.
2. For cotton rugs: machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C (86°F) max, using a mild detergent. No bleach.
3. For wool rugs: machine wash on a wool or delicate cycle with cold water. Use a front-load machine without a center agitator.
4. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to air dry. Never leave in the washer.
5. For rugs larger than 8×10 ft, professional cleaning is recommended.
6. If you find a loose thread, cut it with scissors — never pull it.
