Wool Rugs

Why Wool Changes the Feel of a Room

Wool does more than cover a floor. Its texture gives a room depth, softens hard surfaces and creates the sense of warmth that makes a space feel complete. In a living room, a wool area rug brings the sofa, chairs and coffee table into one visual composition. In a bedroom, it makes the first and last steps of the day softer. In a dining room or home office, it adds comfort while reducing the flat, unfinished feeling that often comes with exposed flooring.

Material matters because a rug is one of the largest textile surfaces in a room. Wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fiber with properties that synthetic alternatives cannot fully reproduce. It helps regulate temperature, provides natural insulation and manages moisture, keeping interiors warmer in winter and more comfortable in summer.

Its fibers are also naturally resilient. Rather than remaining compressed under furniture and daily movement, wool can recover much of its original shape, helping a well-cared-for rug retain its texture and character over time.

What Makes a WOOLABLE® Rug Washable

Traditional tufted wool rugs are often heavy, rigid and difficult to clean at home. WOOLABLE® rugs are constructed differently. Their flexible design makes them lighter and easier to handle without removing the depth and softness that make wool desirable in the first place.

Many designs combine a pile of 100% wool with a base made from recycled cotton. This construction allows the rug to move more freely inside a suitable washing machine and makes everyday care considerably more practical. Instead of treating every spill as a reason for professional cleaning, the entire rug can be washed at home when its individual care instructions are followed.

Selected models also include a separate anti-slip underlay and a cotton tote bag for storage. Because the underlay is not permanently attached to the rug, each part can perform its own function without making the wool layer unnecessarily heavy.

WOOLABLE® is particularly useful for homes where natural materials matter but so does real-life maintenance. It brings washable practicality to a material traditionally chosen for warmth, quality and longevity.

RWS-Certified Wool, Handcrafted with Purpose

The wool used in Lorena Canals rugs is certified according to the Responsible Wool Standard. RWS addresses animal welfare and the management of the land on which sheep graze, providing greater traceability behind the material.

Each rug is handcrafted by artisans in our own factory in India using traditional textile techniques. Small variations in pile, color or finish are natural consequences of this process rather than manufacturing defects. They are what distinguish an artisan-made textile from a completely uniform, mass-produced surface.

Some designs use undyed wool to preserve the natural shades of the fleece. Others introduce color through non-toxic dyes, from warm neutrals and earthy browns to blue, green, pink and multicolored compositions. This makes it possible to choose a wool rug for its quiet texture or use it as the defining visual element in a room.

Choosing the Right Wool Area Rug

The collection ranges from compact 2'4" × 3'3" rugs to large wool area rugs measuring up to 8'2" × 11'2". It also includes runners, oval rugs, round designs of up to 8'2" in diameter and free-form silhouettes.

For a living room, choose a rug large enough to connect the principal furniture. Placing at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug creates a more cohesive seating area. In a larger room, a wool area rug beneath the full arrangement provides greater visual structure and insulation.

A bedroom rug should extend beyond the sides of the bed where your feet naturally land. Smaller wool rugs can be used beside the bed, while larger formats can sit beneath most of the furniture to create a softer, quieter environment.

In dining rooms, allow enough space for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled away from the table. Wool runners work well in hallways and alongside kitchen islands, while round rugs help soften layouts dominated by straight architectural lines.

Always compare the rug’s exact dimensions with the room before ordering. Using painter’s tape to mark the proposed area on the floor is a simple way to understand how the size will interact with the furniture.

How to Wash and Care for a Wool Rug

Before washing, shake out or gently vacuum the rug to remove loose dust and fibers. Use low suction and avoid robot vacuums or vacuum cleaners with rotating beater bars, which can pull or damage the pile.

Wash the rug separately, following the instructions on its product page. Many Lorena Canals wool rugs can be washed at a maximum of 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, and avoid washing machines with a central agitator.

The size and weight of the rug must be appropriate for the capacity of the machine. Compact and medium designs may fit in a household washer, while large wool area rugs can require a high-capacity or commercial machine. The rug needs enough room to move freely during the cycle.

When tumble drying is permitted, use a low temperature and remove the rug promptly. Do not return it to the floor until the pile and base are completely dry. Always follow the instructions for the individual design, as care requirements can vary by size and construction.

What to Know About Natural Wool Shedding

Shedding is a normal characteristic of natural wool, especially when a rug is new. Loose fibers left from the hand-finishing process may appear on the surface during the first weeks of use. This does not mean the rug is coming apart.

Vacuum regularly at low power and without a rotating brush. If a longer thread appears, trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it. A rug pad can also reduce friction and help limit unnecessary movement on the floor.

Because shedding may cause discomfort for babies and toddlers who spend extended periods playing directly on the surface, our WOOLABLE® rugs are recommended for children over three years old. For nurseries or crawling areas, a washable cotton rug may be the more appropriate choice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Washable Wool Rugs

Can a real wool rug be machine washed?

Yes, when the rug has been specifically constructed for machine washing. WOOLABLE® rugs use a lighter and more flexible construction than traditional tufted wool rugs. Follow the care label and ensure the rug is suitable for the capacity and design of your washing machine.

What is the difference between a WOOLABLE® rug and a traditional wool rug?

Traditional wool rugs can be heavy and rigid, often requiring professional cleaning. WOOLABLE® rugs are designed to be lighter, more flexible and washable at home while retaining the warmth and texture of natural wool.

Do large washable wool rugs fit in a regular washing machine?

Not always. Compatibility depends on both the dimensions and weight of the rug and the capacity of the machine. Large wool area rugs may need a high-capacity or commercial washer. Never force a rug into a machine that does not provide enough room for movement.

Are wool rugs suitable for high-traffic rooms?

Wool is naturally resilient and works well in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and other frequently used spaces. Regular low-power vacuuming and prompt treatment of spills will help maintain the pile.

Do wool rugs shed?

Natural wool rugs may shed loose fibers initially. This usually becomes less noticeable with proper care. Vacuum without a rotating brush and never pull loose threads.

Are washable wool rugs suitable for homes with pets?

Their washable construction makes everyday dirt and occasional accidents easier to manage. However, claws, aggressive scratching and powerful vacuum brushes can damage the pile, so routine care should remain gentle.

Do washable wool rugs need an anti-slip pad?

A pad improves grip, cushioning and stability, particularly on smooth flooring. Selected Lorena Canals wool rugs include a separate anti-slip underlay; check the individual product page to confirm what is included.
