Wool rugs are cherished for their durability, warmth, and luxurious feel. Proper care and regular maintenance can help your wool rug last a lifetime. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you clean and preserve your wool rugs effectively, incorporating best practices and addressing frequently asked questions.

Understanding Wool Rug Maintenance

Wool rugs require special attention due to their natural fibers, which are susceptible to damage if cleaned improperly. Regular maintenance not only preserves the look and feel of your rug but also extends its life.

Routine Care

  • Regular Vacuuming: Vacuum your wool rug at least once a week in high-traffic areas and monthly in less-used spaces. This removes surface dirt and prevents particles from settling into the fibers.
  • Shake and Beat: If manageable, take your rug outside occasionally to shake or beat it. This helps dislodge dirt and debris trapped deep within the fibers, similar to the care needed for washable area rugs.

Deep Cleaning Techniques

Deep cleaning your wool rug is essential for removing embedded dirt and restoring its natural beauty.

Equipment and Materials

  • Broom or other long-handled tool
  • Vacuum with a soft-bristled attachment
  • Non-abrasive sponge
  • Wool-safe cleaning solution
  • Light-colored cloths and towels
  • Large tarp for indoor cleaning
  • Fan for quicker drying

Cleaning Steps

  • Pre-Cleaning Preparation: Place your rug on a large tarp if cleaning indoors to protect the flooring.
  • Shaking and Beating: Take the rug outdoors and vigorously shake it or beat it with a broom handle to remove as much dirt as possible.
  • Vacuum Both Sides: Bring the rug back inside and vacuum both the top and underside thoroughly to ensure a deep clean.
  • Spot Cleaning: Address any stains using a wool-safe cleaner. Apply the cleaner to a cloth and gently dab the stain. Avoid scrubbing to prevent damage to the fibers.
  • Washing the Rug: Mix a wool-safe detergent in water following manufacturer’s instructions for dilution. Use a sponge to wash the rug gently, without saturating the fibers.
  • Rinsing: Rinse the sponge and go over the cleaned areas to remove any soap residue, which can attract more dirt if left in the fibers.
  • Drying: Blot the cleaned areas with towels to remove excess moisture. Allow the rug to air dry completely, using fans to accelerate the process if necessary.

FAQs About Cleaning Wool Rugs

How Do You Clean a Wool Rug Yourself?

Cleaning a wool rug yourself involves careful vacuuming, spot cleaning with appropriate solutions, and possibly a gentle wash with a wool-safe detergent if necessary. Always follow the specific care guidelines provided by the rug manufacturer.

Can You Wash a 100% Wool Rug?

Yes, you can wash a 100% wool rug, but it should be done with care. Use only wool-safe detergents and avoid excessive water, as wool is highly absorbent and slow to dry.

Is It OK to Steam Clean a Wool Rug?

Steam cleaning a wool rug is generally not recommended as the heat and moisture can shrink the fibers or cause other damage. It's best to stick to methods that use less water and no heat.

Can You Use a Carpet Shampooer on a Wool Rug?

Using a carpet shampooer on a wool rug is risky as it can saturate the rug too much and potentially damage the fibers. If deep cleaning is needed, it's safer to use a dry extraction method or hire a professional who specializes in wool rugs.

By following these detailed steps and tips, you can ensure your wool rug remains a stunning and comfortable feature in your home. Proper care not only enhances the longevity of your rug but also maintains its aesthetic and functional qualities. Explore our wool rug and cotton rug collections for more luxurious options.

We are really happy with our custom rugs. The colors are beautiful, the fabric is soft and dense and it can easily be cleaned. Since we have little children the quality and non-toxicity of the materials are very important to us.

Softest, Even After Washing

It’s incredibly soft underfoot — perfect for lounging or playing with my kid and dog. The clean, simple design makes the whole room feel fresher and more put-together. I was a little nervous about how it would hold up after washing, but it came out looking just as good as new. Highly recommend for anyone looking for something cozy, stylish, and low-maintenance.

Great rug, disappointing service

I ordered this rug, as the website initially indicated it was available to ship. Then they informed me that delivery time would be 1-2 months. After about 6 weeks I called for an update and the person I talked to was extremely rude and condescending, loudly interrupting me several times, letting me know I could cancel. Basically the message she gave me was “deal with it, not our problem”. I finally got the rug after waiting approx 3 months.

Rug has gaps

It wasn't clear to me in the photos or description, that there is significant gaps between the color squares in this rug. About half an inch between each square, which makes it feel strange to walk on.
I probably wouldn't have purchased if I knew this

Absolute love!!

Everything is just stunning, the design, the quality, the feeling. Probably the best brand in this category! Bravo :)

Thinner than expected but serviceable

I thought it would add a bit more padding, but otherwise it's fine and does the job

Love the customization!

I was so excited to be able to design a rug to fit our intended space perfectly! Will definitely order again.

The perfect rug!

We got this for my son's nursery and it's just perfect. The color, the look, the softness, and the fact that's washable... my husband and I are already talking about getting another rug from Lorena for the living room.

Love Lorena rugs and pillows

So cute, all of it! Great quality, fair price, wonderful customer support, and stylish! What's not to love?

Nice rug

It’s not a jaw-dropping rug, but it is soft, pretty, and I like that it’s washable. It works for my kid’s play area. I have never really seen a rug like this before, it’s kind of like a long yarn shag situation more than what I consider a traditional rug with dense, short tufts.
