Many designs combine a pile of 100% wool with a base made from recycled cotton. This construction allows the rug to move more freely inside a suitable washing machine and makes everyday care considerably more practical. Instead of treating every spill as a reason for professional cleaning, the entire rug can be washed at home when its individual care instructions are followed.

Selected models also include a separate anti-slip underlay and a cotton tote bag for storage. Because the underlay is not permanently attached to the rug, each part can perform its own function without making the wool layer unnecessarily heavy.

The wool used in Lorena Canals rugs is certified according to the Responsible Wool Standard. RWS addresses animal welfare and the management of the land on which sheep graze, providing greater traceability behind the material.

Each rug is handcrafted by artisans in our own factory in India using traditional textile techniques. Small variations in pile, color or finish are natural consequences of this process rather than manufacturing defects. They are what distinguish an artisan-made textile from a completely uniform, mass-produced surface.

Some designs use undyed wool to preserve the natural shades of the fleece. Others introduce color through non-toxic dyes, from warm neutrals and earthy browns to blue, green, pink and multicolored compositions. This makes it possible to choose a wool rug for its quiet texture or use it as the defining visual element in a room.

Choosing the Right Wool Area Rug

The collection ranges from compact 2'4" × 3'3" rugs to large wool area rugs measuring up to 8'2" × 11'2". It also includes runners, oval rugs, round designs of up to 8'2" in diameter and free-form silhouettes.

For a living room, choose a rug large enough to connect the principal furniture. Placing at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug creates a more cohesive seating area. In a larger room, a wool area rug beneath the full arrangement provides greater visual structure and insulation.

How to Wash and Care for a Wool Rug

Before washing, shake out or gently vacuum the rug to remove loose dust and fibers. Use low suction and avoid robot vacuums or vacuum cleaners with rotating beater bars, which can pull or damage the pile.

Wash the rug separately, following the instructions on its product page. Many Lorena Canals wool rugs can be washed at a maximum of 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, and avoid washing machines with a central agitator.

The size and weight of the rug must be appropriate for the capacity of the machine. Compact and medium designs may fit in a household washer, while large wool area rugs can require a high-capacity or commercial machine. The rug needs enough room to move freely during the cycle.

When tumble drying is permitted, use a low temperature and remove the rug promptly. Do not return it to the floor until the pile and base are completely dry. Always follow the instructions for the individual design, as care requirements can vary by size and construction.

What to Know About Natural Wool Shedding

Shedding is a normal characteristic of natural wool, especially when a rug is new. Loose fibers left from the hand-finishing process may appear on the surface during the first weeks of use. This does not mean the rug is coming apart.

Vacuum regularly at low power and without a rotating brush. If a longer thread appears, trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it. A rug pad can also reduce friction and help limit unnecessary movement on the floor.
