How to Size a Bedroom Rug: The Three Most Common Layouts

Full coverage (all legs on): The largest and most luxurious option. The rug extends at least 18–24 inches beyond all sides of the bed. For a King bed, this typically means an 9×12 ft rug; for a Queen, an 8×10 ft. The whole room feels softer and more cohesive.

Two-thirds placement (front legs off): The most common approach. The rug sits under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, with the foot end fully on the rug. A 5×8 ft rug works for a Queen; a 6×9 ft for a King. The bed appears anchored without requiring a very large rug.

Runners on each side (no rug under the bed): Two narrow runners placed along each side of the bed — each runner roughly 2×6 ft or 2.5×8 ft. How to Care for a Bedroom Rug

1. Vacuum weekly with a low-suction setting, moving in the direction of the pile. This prevents dust build-up between washes.
2. For cotton rugs: machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C (86°F) max with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach.
3. For wool rugs: machine wash on a wool or delicate cycle with cold water, in a front-load machine without a center agitator. Do not wring.
4. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to air dry. Never leave sitting wet in the washer.
5. Rotate the rug every 6–12 months — even low-traffic areas develop patterns over time.
