Kitchen Rug Sizing: What Format Works Where

Getting the format right matters more in a kitchen than in any other room because the space is typically narrow and defined by function.

In front of the sink: A runner or small rectangular rug measuring 2×3 ft or 2×4 ft is the standard. It catches splashes, cushions your feet during dish-washing, and wipes clean easily. Make sure it sits flat — no curled edges — to avoid a trip hazard.

In front of the stove or island: Same logic as the sink — a runner or 2×3 ft mat parallel to the counter. If you have an island, a wider format (3×5 ft or 4×6 ft) can anchor the island as its own zone.

How to Wash a Kitchen Rug at Home

Kitchen rugs need washing more frequently than rugs in any other room. Here's the exact process:

1. Shake the rug outside first to remove loose debris — crumbs, pet hair, dust. This protects your washer drum.
2. Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle at 30°C (86°F) max. Use a mild, color-safe detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener.
3. Use a front-load washer or a top-load machine without a center agitator. A center agitator can damage the pile.
4. Tumble dry on low heat, or lay flat to air dry. Do not leave in the washer after the cycle ends.
5. For runners with fringes (like the Gastro or Duetto): straighten fringes by hand after drying.
6. Vacuum weekly between washes with a low-suction setting to prevent grease and dust from embedding in the fibers.

For very heavy kitchen use, washing every 2–4 weeks is reasonable. The cotton construction handles frequent washing without degrading.
